Cape Town is perhaps best known for its spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain and for Robben Island, once home to South Africa's most famous political prisoner, Nelson Mandela. However, this bustling South African city has many other attractions on offer for visitors ranging from adrenaline-fuelled sports and stunning natural scenery to several World Heritage Sites and a fine wine region. It is also a prime business destination with an excellent conference and convention infrastructure. For visitors hoping for a little luxury and indulgence during their stay in Capetown five star hotels are plentiful.
The former prison Robben Island is one of South Africa's most visited attractions. Now a World Heritage Site, it was once internationally famed and reviled as the prison holding some of the South African apartheid regime's highest profile political prisoners, amongst them Nelson Mandela.
Since the end of apartheid Cape Town has been trying to improve its tarnished image. Its efforts culminated with it being selected as one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In anticipation, the city's facilities for visitors were greatly upgraded, including hotel provision and these days Cape Town is a thriving modern city which is easy to visit and to get around.
Most tourists head for the V&A Waterfront area of the city, located at the historic harbor. Here visitors will find a vast selection of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs as well as museums and other tourist attractions. It is claimed to be South Africa's most visited destination and many of the Cape Town five star hotels are within walking distance of this waterfront area offering visitors easy access.
If city life is not your thing there are a host of other attractions and activities on offer. Table Mountain National Park is a naturalist's dream with approximately 2000 different species of plant found within the national park. Because of this rich biodiversity the national park is a Natural World Heritage Site. The park's area stretches from Signal Hill at the northern end of the Table Mountain Chain to Cape Point, the infamous Cape of Good Hope, in the south. Panoramic views across the park area can be seen from the top of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway.
Many more plants and flowers can be seen at another World Heritage Site, Kirstenbosch Gardens. This is the national botanical garden of South Africa and those in the know can spot more than 22,000 plants indigenous to the region. Even without spotting the plants it is a pleasant area for a stroll or a picnic and there are often outdoor concerts in the summer.
This region of South Africa is well known for its fine wine and food. Visitors can follow wine routes through three areas of the Cape Winelands; Constantia, Helderberg and Durbanville, where they can learn about Cape wines and enjoy some tastings. The oldest Cape vineyards are in the Constantia area where many of the region's best known wine estates and restaurants can be found. Foodies should visit South Africa's so-called gourmet capital, Franschhoek, also found in the Cape Winelands region.
Cape Town is also a mecca for extreme sports enthusiasts. It is famous for having the world's highest commercial bungee jump from the Bloukrans Bridge but if that is a jump too far, try flying through the trees at the Ceres Zipslide Adventures or skydiving from Lion's Head onto nearby Camps Bay beach. There are also plenty of opportunities for quad biking, mountain biking or paragliding, or even swimming with great white sharks.
The city is one of the main business destinations in Africa and the Middle East. Business visitors and conference organizers are advised and supported by the Cape Town Convention Bureau and the Cape Town International Convention Area has large areas of space available for events.
Many of the Capetown five star hotels also offer business and meeting facilities, alongside the facilities you would expect at a five star hotel such as a 24-hour reception desk, concierge service, room service and leisure facilities. The hotel restaurants offer fine dining with menus featuring local specialties as well as international dishes, accompanied by fine Cape wines from the hotel bars.
Several of the Capetown five star hotels are located to give guests views across the city or towards Table Mountain or the ocean. There is a wide variety of hotels to choose from ranging from the large and modern with many facilities and mod cons to smaller, more intimate luxury guest houses and villas or individually stylish boutique hotels.
